FMHAC provides an essential voice in California by training forensic mental health professionals, educating the public and giving support to legislation that improves the system in which we provide treatment to mentally ill individuals.

It is our goal to:

• Foster the provision of effective mental health services to persons in the criminal justice/mental health system including jails, prisons, state hospitals and community diversion programs;
• Assist mental health and criminal justice professionals, governmental and private agencies and the general public in understanding the nature of forensic mental health services; and
• Enhance the quality of forensic mental health evaluation, diagnostic and community treatment and supervision services.

To this end, FMHAC’s annual conference has provided intensive training in current forensic mental health issues.  Over the past 10 years an average of 450 psychiatrists, psychologists, LCSWs, MFTs, RNs, probation officers, police officers and other correctional/law enforcement professionals have attended our conference annually.  The conference has gained a national reputation as a wonderful place to network and attend high quality presentations.

FMHAC is committed to the goal of first-rate forensic mental health care in California through quality education and training to the professionals who need it.  We think an important part of effective forensic mental health services is to draw together professionals from a variety disciplines who all need current information and practical strategies for working with their patients, clients, or inmates who are mentally ill.  In 2006 we provided a special track on Mental Health Courts and in 2007 we presented a MIOCR track where administrators and practitioners learned about the new Mentally Ill Offender Crime Reduction Grant Program.
